Michelle Yeoh is Asia’s first best actress Oscar winner 

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has presented the Oscar for best actress in a leading role to an Asian woman for the first time in its 95-year history. 

Michelle Yeoh accepted the Oscar for her performance as Evelyn Wang, the Chinese first-generation immigrant proprietor of a laundry in the center of the film’s absurdist multiverse, in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

As she headed to the stage to claim her award, Yeoh received an extended standing ovation.

She held up the Oscar trophy and declared, “For all the young boys and girls who like me who are watching tonight, this is a light of hope and opportunity.”

“And ladies, don’t let anyone ever tell you you are past your prime.”

She devoted her victory to her mother, whom she described as a “superhero.”

Yeoh, who was born in Malaysia, rose to prominence in Hong Kong cinema before gaining international recognition in films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Crazy Rich Asians. This was her first nomination for an Oscar. 
 

In an April 2013 interview with Alisa Chang of All Things Considered, Yeoh stated that she believed Asians may finally find a larger voice in Hollywood and society.

“All we have to do is rock the boat and demand attention,” she remarked. “Give us a chance, for guess what? We exist within your culture. We are members of society and an integral component of this entire community. This is the only way we will receive more opportunities: by fighting for them and refusing to say, “Well, I’ll turn the other cheek. Never longer will I turn the other cheek!”

Before tonight’s event, Yeoh’s efforts in Everything Everywhere All at Once earned her numerous honors, including a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award, a number of local Film Critics Awards, a SAG Award, and nominations for a Critics’ Choice Award and a BAFTA Award.

Hyun Bin, Son Ye Jin suing divorce allegations 

Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin are contemplating legal action against the content producer who started rumors that the “Crash Landing On You” co-stars are divorcing.

A video was released to YouTube last week saying that the couple had voluntarily decided to a divorce due to Bin’s claimed overseas gambling losses.

According to the now-deleted video, the couple separated in March after six months of marriage. Bin and Jin have been married for nearly a year, not only since September 2022.

The agencies of Bin and Jin, VAST Entertainment and MSteam Entertainment, respectively, denounced the rumors as false and announced in separate but identical announcements that legal action will be taken.

“[The claims are] without merit… We continuously watch the rumors. We intend to take legal action following an internal investigation,” claimed VAST Entertainment, while MSteam Entertainment stated, “We’ve already asked YouTube to remove the video. We shall take decisive action… on the content.”

Before reconnecting on the blockbuster drama “Crash Landing On You,” Bin and Jin initially co-starred in the 2018 film “The Negotiation,” in which the former played his first evil role.

The couple acknowledged their relationship at the start of the year 2021 and were engaged the following year. They were married in March 2022 and had a son in November of that year

LA Tenorio is battling Stage Three colon cancer 

The ‘Ironman’ of the PBA is facing the greatest challenge of his life.

Barangay Ginebra guard LA Tenorio, 38, has been diagnosed with stage three colon cancer, according to a statement posted on the PBA website.

The former Ateneo star issued the statement on Tuesday, apologizing to the public for keeping his first diagnosis a secret for three weeks as he missed PBA Governors’ Cup games with the Gin Kings.

When announcing his surgery on March 8, his team stated that it was for a “aggravated sports hernia” and that Ginebra expected their starting point guard to return in “three to four weeks.”

“I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer very lately. Three weeks ago, the initial examination caused me to immediately miss training and games.” Tenorio stated, “I have completed my operation and will soon begin treatment for the next six months.” 

Tenorio made it apparent that he is not yet retiring from basketball, stating that he expects to recover soon with the assistance of physicians from the Philippines and Singapore.

“I have not only devoted 17 years to the PBA, but also my entire life to basketball. I have sacrificed my health and body for the love of the game. That has been my love and passion. Unfortunately, there are things one cannot control,” stated Tenorio.

After 744 consecutive games, the 5-8 guard from Batangas missed his first PBA game on March 1, ending the greatest string of consecutive games played by a PBA player.

He expressed regret for concealing his genuine position from the public.

“I would like to release a statement regarding my health by first apologizing to my colleagues, some coaches, the PBA, the fans, the media, and even my friends. As most of you are aware, I have been recovering from a minor injury since last January’s Finals. This was my explanation for my unexpected absence. My deepest apologies to everyone.”

Tenorio stated, “Since my work in sports is intertwined with health and entertainment, it will be extremely impossible to keep the genuine reason a secret and will only lead to needless rumors, fake news, and misinterpretations.”

Tenorio, 38, expressed confidence that he will recover and be stronger than before.

Vanessa Hudgens will shoot Filipino travel documentary in March

In the latter part of March, actress Vanessa Hudgens will be filming a trip documentary in Manila and Palawan. Hudgens is of Filipino and American descent.

According to Variety, the documentary will focus on Vanessa’s connection with her mother, Gina, as well as her sister, Stella, and how they interact with one another. Her mother was born in the Philippines, and when she was 25 years old, she moved to the United States. Vanessa was named after her mother.

I shall pay close attention in the future to prevent such situations from occurring. Again, we sincerely apologize.”

Chaeyoung, one of nine members of the female group, also performed while donning a T-shirt with the QAnon motto “When we go one, we go all.” The tagline and logo belong to the 2017 far-right political movement, which is notorious for propagating graphic conspiracy theories in support of former President Donald Trump.

France will stop civil servants from using TikTok at work 

According to a tweet sent by the French Minister of the Public Service, Stanislas Guerini, the use of the video-sharing app TikTok, which is controlled by the Chinese government, would be prohibited on the work phones of French civil officials.

“In order to guarantee the cybersecurity of our administrations and civil servants, the government has decided to ban recreational applications such as TikTok on the professional phones of civil servants,” he said in a statement. “This decision was made in order to guarantee the cybersecurity of our administrations and civil servants.”

He noted that during the past several weeks, numerous of France’s European and international allies have taken actions to limit or outright ban the downloading and installation of the TikTok program by their respective governments. These measures have been taken by various countries.

Boksoon does a grade-A assassination for her final project in order to orchestrate the death by suicide of a student who is, critically, not a minor. Boksoon learns the target is the son of Senator Oh Jeong-sik when she appears on the “program” with MK “intern” Kim Young-ji.

He hired MK to kill his son in order to save face, but Boksoon decided against it due to MK’s complicated connection with her own daughter.

The prosecution requests prison term of two years for Ravi and six months for Nafla 

The first trial for nine defendants, including Ravi and Nafla, took place in the 7th Criminal Division of the Seoul Southern District Court on the morning of April 11 KST. The following day, the prosecution requested that Ravi and Nafla get prison terms of two years and two years and six months, respectively.

Singapore Airlines doubles up for Sydney with two Airbus A380s

There are ups and downs in commercial aviation, and I’m not just talking about takeoffs and landings. Australia hasn’t seen many A380s over the past three years, but starting this month, Singapore Airlines will be bringing in three per day, two to Sydney and one to Melbourne.

Daily flights by four SIA A380s to Australia

On Tuesday, Singapore Airlines (SIA) began operating a daily service from Melbourne, and yesterday Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) welcomed back double-daily Airbus A380 services. SQ221 of SIA departed Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) on Wednesday at 20:43 and touched down at Sydney Airport on Thursday at 05:34 morning.

The 2012 Airbus A380, with the registration 9V-SKT and MSN 092, travelled 6,288 kilometres (3,900 miles) in 6:51 hours. At 11:46, the superjumbo departed as SQ232, and it returned to Singapore at 17:59.

Sydney residents can now choose between two daily Singapore Airlines A380 services, one Airbus A350-900, and a Boeing 777-300ER. The 777-300ER (SQ212) departs first at 07:55, followed by an A380 at 11:00, a second A380 at 15:00, and the A350-900 at 18:05 (SQ242). 

There are 111 SIA flights available each week for Australians

According to Louis Arul, regional vice president for SIA South West Pacific, the second A380’s arrival in Sydney will bring the airline’s seat capacity to nearly 100% of pre-COVID levels. Added him:

“Since borders were reopened in November 2021, travel demand has remained strong in all segments. The additional A380 also gives customers access to First or Suites Class on three of our four daily flights from Sydney.

“The increased capacity will ensure that Australians have more opportunities to travel abroad for work or pleasure and that tourists from all over the world can experience what Australia and New South Wales have to offer. Our continued commitment to Sydney is demonstrated by our delivery of more seats across our premium cabins as well as increased capacity in economy class.

The second A380 takes the place of one of SIA’s medium-haul A350-900s, bringing an additional 1,176 seats per week to the Sydney market to meet rising demand during the busiest travel period of the year. A380 operations twice per day have Since January 2020, there hasn’t been a service between Singapore and Sydney; as a result, Melbourne and Sydney both have a total of four daily services. SIA operates 111 flights per week between Australia and Singapore in May, including 737-8 MAX flights to Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.

Geoff Culbert, CEO of Sydney Airport, has been a steadfast and outspoken advocate for airlines to increase capacity, though Singapore Airlines would not be faulted for doing so.

Phuket: Kazakh man detained for shooting Russian

A Kazakh man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting and injuring a Russian man in a gun attack in the Thalang district in the north of Phuket province, Thailand, on Wednesday.

The man was identified as Artur Legay. He was arrested by immigration police at Phuket International Airport, serving Phuket Province, on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, a Russian man who was sitting in a car was seriously injured in a gun attack near Laguna Phuket at around 11.45 a.m. Subsequently, the Phuket 191 emergency response centre received a report about the incident. 

According to witnesses and CCTV footage, a car arrived in front of the cafe near Laguna Phuket. The Russian man was sitting inside the car. Subsequently, a man, whose face was covered, arrived on a Honda PCX motorcycle and approached the car. He fired four shots with a gun at the man sitting inside the car. Later on, he fled from the spot. People took the Russian man in the vehicle and rushed him to Thalang Hospital.

The man inside the car was identified as Dmitry Aleynikov, a 44-year-old Russian national. He has injured his chest, right armpit, and left arm due to the gunshots. Reportedly, the Russian man is alive, but he is in a coma.

When police started the investigation, they arrested Artur Legay, suspected of shooting and injuring the Russian man. The police officer found a jacket, shoes, gloves, and a weapon near a nearby river near the crime scene. Further investigation of the matter is underway.
